Director’s View: A Reflection On The Past 15 Years

We’re now nearing the end of 2017, and it’s been quite a year for us. More specifically, 2017 marks for us a very special anniversary – our 15th year of running as a business. It really is hard to fathom just how much time has passed, with many wonderful memories and journeys made. It’s all worthy of celebration.

Time for reflection

Reflecting on the reasons for starting our company is a sentimental exercise. It turns out that a big leap of faith was the correct choice to have made.

Starting Support Tree, or as it was then known, JLCIT, was great timing, I was ready to go it alone and not be held back. It was time to do what I had always believed I should and start my own business.

The turning point

Previously, I had worked in a few smaller businesses as the “IT Guy” and realised that it was an inefficient role for businesses of less than 50 people. I’d be inundated with requests at some points, and spent the rest of my time twiddling my thumbs. I was either inundated with work or under-worked. My role made no sense for an SME. It led to stress and often boredom, and made me become very disengaged with the role. In my opinion, there’s nothing worse than an IT Guy with too much time, over-complexity, ad-hoc work and poorly-planned system updates. These caused endless issues for the systems and staff and simply could have been avoided.

From this, the idea of creating a company that would relieve SMEs of inefficient IT experiences and take away risk for business was born. These were my drivers for developing a model that could provide this experience, and is still a model we use today.

Of course, when I started convincing companies to select us as their provider, it was not an easy task. I very quickly realized that it was not small business but micro business that we needed to focus on. Fast forward to a few years and our model is one that we have seen deliver value and results consistently.

Time for celebration

To celebrate the landmark of 15 birthday we arranged a party, celebrating our clients, contacts, friends and family. Some of our guests had been around when we first started the company. They had witnessed us zooming around London, delivering our services in super-fast time from our bicycles.

We organized the event at one of our client’s sites, Bloomsbury Lanes. Hospitality is our main vertical, and we hosted roughly 50 guests who enjoyed the bowling, pizza and some drinks.

The event felt very much like a bunch of friends coming together, with old and new contacts meeting and reconnecting to enjoy one another’s company. It felt like an extension of our office environment. Throughout the evening there was quite some competition, banter and some questionable karaoke singing! It was a long overdue evening which helped us enjoy the social side of our long and close relationships with all those that work in and with Support Tree.

Our ambitions for the future

We are now in the middle of an exciting journey. One where our ambitious plans are in motion to take us to the next level. We intend to double in size within the next 3 years and there is no reason why this cannot happen with the team, clients and plan that we have. Naturally, we need some help to make this happen and we believe referrals are the way.

We have consistently driven new business by our ability to do a great job. I believe that our service-led focus has helped us achieve two very positive outcomes:

      • The dedication to provide our customers with world-class results
      • The ability to continue growing our business

We intend to draw on the support and experience of our customers to ask for their support when moving forward on our growth plans.

The future really looks bright for Support Tree and the next three years will be a great time to join us on our journey.
